The history of the X5 begins in 1994, when ideas began on a BMW sports utility vehicle after the acquisition of Land Rover. By the autumn of 1996, design work was approved and the design basis for the E53 Model X5 was defined.
Even though the X5 was an all-wheel drive vehicle, BMW chose from the start to route 62% of the engine's torque to the rear wheels, making it feel as close as possible to the company's rear-wheel drive saloon cars.

Excellent handling and responsiveness on the X5 and for me it really is head and shoulders above the competition. Terrific to drive and looks the part, what more could you want? — Dean Lowe, Gateshead
My second X5. Previously owned Range Rover Sport. Does not even come close. The Brits sure can glue nice looking wood to a dashboard but the Germans know how to put a great car together. — Jim Brannigan, Boston
I have used my second generation BMW X5 extensively to tow a caravan around most of Europe during my Summer vacations. It always leaves me with the comforting feeling of ample power, even when climbing steep gradients. This is the second X5 I have owned and the first was so good that I could not change it for anything else. — Kevin Vowles, Frome
