The Porsche 911 is a two-door, 2+2 high performance classic German sports cars made since 1963 by Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany. It has a rear-mounted six cylinder boxer engine and all round independent suspension. It has undergone continuous development, though the basic concept has remained the same.
In the 1999 international poll for the award of Car of the Century, the 911 came fifth.[5] It is one of two in the top five that had remained continuously in production.
The water-cooled Type 996 replaced the air-cooled mechanism used in the 911 for 34 years. This was also the first major re-design to the body shell. The 996 styling shared its front end with Porsche's mid engined Boxster.
Ferdinand Porsche Senior established an independent design and engineering firm in 1931 and designed the Volkswagen Beetle. Ferdinand Porsche Junior helped the new company to grow and was instrumental in designing the 356, Porsche's first sports car. Porsche introduced its own engines in the 1950's, along with more powerful versions of the 356. After the 356 came a true legend, the Porsche 911.
Ahead of its time when introduced in 1964, the rear-engine 911 is still a force to be reckoned with some 52 years later.
Porsche cars began competing almost immediately. To date, Porsche cars have won an estimated 24,000 auto races around the world, including more than 50 class wins at Le Mans.

This has to be the ultimate classic sport coupe, a car I dreamed of owning when I was young and I have to say it really has lived up to the dream. Driving is as powerful and smooth as you would expect, handling is exceptional and overall it’s just a fantastic car to get into every day. Get one and I promise you will not be disappointed! — Keith Dobson, Esher
With the howling sound of this engine being revved hard in your ears and the wind in your hair you can say to yourself 'Hey man I've arrived....' Yes this Porsche needs to be driven hard as all Porches do! And so what if you annoy any 'less worthy' underachievers sharing 'your' motorway lane whilst your taming this beast, Tough!! If they could sell timeshare like you can then they might have one too! — Todd Carter, Birmingham
You may have heard that the 911 is an awesome tool - well it’s good and then some. There aren't many cars you can drive at 30mph in top and then right up to 185mph - not that i have! Handling is great - only problem is affordability - but that’s what makes it special when you get one. — Michael Wilkes, Derby
